Google Chrome's "This extension is no longer supported" #3563
Comments
uBlock still seems to work for me on chrome and I'm on a personal Chromebook (for school), I can easily switch to Linux to have better browser support for other browsers when it actually breaks so yeah. |
Chrome now automatically turns off the extension? can y'all port this to MV3? |
temp workaround for those who want to install but button is disabled -- #3558 (comment) |
You can keep support till June using chrome flags. Disable:
Enable:
This will stop uBO getting disabled/removed and will let you install from CWS without a problem. |
Thanks a lot for this amazing extension and for uBlock Origin Lite too. I recommend updating the description at https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ublock-origin/cjpalhdlnbpafiamejdnhcphjbkeiagm to make it easier to find both the explanation at https://ublockorigin.com/ and this issue. Currently the GitHub is only visible after clicking "See more", which most people will miss, and even if they find it, the links are to https://github.com/gorhill/ which I presume is out of date now. It's also possible to provide a Website link for the Details section of that page. |
uBO doesn't have its own website. |
So what is https://ublockorigin.com/ then? |
It's a fan website. You can scroll down to the bottom
uBO project is only available at https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock |
I see, thanks for clarification. Nevertheless, my original point remains that it's currently too hard to find information about the lack of MV3 support and the move to uBOL when the starting point is the Chrome Web Store. |
Even if https://ublockorigin.com/ is unofficial, it's still more helpful than the CWS entry. I would also suggest transferring the gorhill repos to this organization - it's a bit confusing having the various repos split across two places. |
Anyways, it's quite off-topic now. |
Are there any plans to make it an offline extension, like how ByPassPaywalls is? like how they do it: https://gitflic.ru/user/magnolia1234 Would making it an extension where you have to install somehow bypass the limits to the number of ads that can be blocked in the new Chrome extension specifications? |
I don't know what you mean by "offline". uBO is an offline extension if you turn off filter lists auto update. The problem is MV2 code inside chromium itself will be removed, and it's out of uBO control. There's nothing we can do, regardless of which site you put the code in. The issue of the extension you link above is not related to uBO's issue at all. |
Alternative: migrate from chrome to brave (a chromium browser) and you can keep uBO |
but will i be able to keep sync with my bookmarks in my chrome browser on my chromebook? |
try this extension (it should sync the bookmarks between the browsers and devices) installing it in brave and chrome |
Would it be possible to add an |
i mean like since chrome limits the number of ads that can be blocked in the extension, cant the extension be sideloaded and coded in a way so that the block filter list is stored locally and then there are no limits to the number of ads that can be blocked? |
Already explained in 3 different issues, a duplicate of:
I don't know what do you exactly mean, but if you mean to make uBlock an application instead of a browser plugin, then it was already explained, a duplicate of: |
That's not the issue here. I don't know why you just focus on "sideloaded" thing while the issue is browsers give extensions API to interact with websites' resources. If browsers remove the APIs, there will be no "tools" for extensions to work with websites, regardless of you "sideloading" or whatever you are imagining here. Do you really understand how extensions work? It's off topic now, so please don't discuss this more. |
#3563 (comment) - If your Chromebook does not support installing the Linux version of the browser, I don't see any chance of replacement without replacing the entire system with unlocked format support for Linux (I don't see any hope that Brave from the Play Store will add extension support in time, while your access to the Play Store works). |
Please read "About Google Chrome's "This extension may soon no longer be supported"".
This was written a few months ago but the content is still relevant.
Please do not open issues about the removal of support for uBlock Origin in your browser, or other Chromium-based browsers.
uBlock Origin is still fully supported in Firefox and other Gecko-based browsers.
uBlock Origin Lite might be a suitable replacement, only you can make this determination, see "Frequently asked questions (FAQ)" for more details about uBlock Origin Lite.
Important: Note that to make uBO Lite closer to the blocking efficiency of uBO, you need to set the default filtering mode to Optimal or Complete. Out of the box the default filtering mode is Basic.
