Do not require that unsafe fields lack drop glue #137808
Conversation
Instead, we adopt the position that introducing an `unsafe` field itself carries a safety invariant: that if you assign an invariant to that field weaker than what the field's destructor requires, you must ensure that field is in a droppable state in your destructor. See: - rust-lang/rfcs#3458 (comment) - https://rust-lang.zulipchat.com/#narrow/channel/213817-t-lang/topic/unsafe.20fields.20RFC/near/502113897
r? @nnethercote rustbot has assigned @nnethercote. Use |
AFAICT the code changes implement the PR description correctly. But this stuff is way outside my areas of expertise and I shouldn't r+ it by myself. @RalfJung, can you run an eyeball over this? It's a small change, mostly just removing code. Thanks. |
cc @compiler-errors who has reviewed previous PRs for this lang team experiment, too. |
👍 from my side; I originally suggested this view of looking at unsafe fields and their invariants so I'm of course on-board with implementing this. :) (And anyway this is just for the experiment, in the end we'll see how the RFC goes.) |
Ok, then: @bors r+ |

Rollup merge of rust-lang#137808 - jswrenn:droppy-unsafe-fields, r=nnethercote Do not require that unsafe fields lack drop glue Instead, we adopt the position that introducing an `unsafe` field itself carries a safety invariant: that if you assign an invariant to that field weaker than what the field's destructor requires, you must ensure that field is in a droppable state in your destructor.
